‘It sneaks up on you’: Tiffany Haddish says a string of losses led to her DUI arrests as prosecutors fight bid to dismiss her case

Emmy and Oscar-winning comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish is publicly detailing the emotional turmoil that led to two DUI arrests, as she battles to have one of the cases thrown out due to a lengthy delay. Haddish, best known for her breakout role in the 2017 hit film Girls Trip, has been open about her struggles with grief and the consequences that followed.

In a recent interview on the podcast Happy with Tammi Mac, Haddish explained that her first DUI arrest in January 2022 in Peachtree City, Georgia, came just days after two devastating losses: the death of her beloved grandmother, Alice Ray, and the passing of her dog of 14 years. Her grandmother was not only a former 1950s swimsuit model but also Haddish’s primary caregiver during her youth and her biggest inspiration.

“Four days after she passed, I got a DUI charge,” Haddish said. “I got arrested, and then my dog died right before my grandmother passed away. I had that dog for about 14 years. I didn’t know I could love an animal that much. It was a lot.”

The actress was in the midst of filming Disney’s Haunted Mansion when the arrest occurred. Despite being booked and released within about an hour and a half, she still made it to set by 6 a.m. the same day. She recounted revealing the arrest to her co-stars, including LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Jamie Lee Curtis, who initially thought she was joking until her mugshot made headlines later that evening.

“They were like, ‘You really got arrested? We didn’t believe you. We thought you were joking,’” Haddish recalled. The jokes lasted only about 10 minutes before the gravity of the situation set in. “I’m probably gonna get fired. This is a Disney movie. This is probably gonna be a problem,” she remembered thinking.

Despite that fear, Haddish was not fired, and the film was released in 2023. However, the personal storm continued. In November 2023, she was arrested again in Beverly Hills, California, on similar DUI charges after police found her asleep behind the wheel of a running car stopped in the street.

That California case was resolved when Haddish accepted a plea deal that dropped the DUI charges in exchange for a no-contest plea to a vehicle code violation. She was placed on one year of probation and required to complete a drunk driving program and community service.

Grief and Its Sneaky Nature

Haddish has described how the grief from losing her grandmother and her dog manifested in ways she did not expect. “I kept trying to figure out how to handle the grief. I’d get on stage to do comedy, then suddenly start crying in the middle of my set. I turned it into part of the performance, so people thought I was acting. But I wasn’t,” she shared. “That’s grief. It sneaks up on you, and I had to figure out how to cope with it.”

This emotional vulnerability led to her making reckless choices, including impaired driving. She admitted to smoking marijuana before her Georgia arrest, saying, “I definitely was … I did smoke some weed, though. But that’s neither here nor there.”

Haddish has since gotten sober and embraced celibacy as part of her recovery journey. In another interview, she confessed to making poor decisions in relationships and using substances to numb the pain of her losses.

The Fight for Dismissal in Georgia

While her California case is settled, the Georgia arrest from January 2022 remains unresolved. Haddish’s attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that the more than 50-month delay violates Georgia’s speedy trial laws and has damaged her career and personal life.

Prosecutors, however, oppose the dismissal. They admit the four-year delay could hurt their case but claim it was unintentional. They also argue that Haddish never formally requested a speedy trial, which is a key requirement under Georgia law. Furthermore, they dispute her claim that the pending charge cost her work or restricted her international travel.

Haddish remains defiant. “I want my hearing date. I’m going to have my date. I want my day in court,” she stated. “But who knows? By then, by the time I get my hearing date, the laws might change, then maybe they’ll drop it.”

The case continues to attract attention because of Haddish’s high profile and the broader issues of how grief and substance use intersect with the legal system. The outcome could set a precedent for similar cases involving delayed prosecution.

Career and Personal Life After the Arrests

Haddish’s career has been on a rollercoaster since her DUI arrests. After Girls Trip catapulted her to fame, she starred in films like Night School, The Kitchen, Like a Boss, and received critical acclaim for her role in The Card Counter in 2021. She also earned an Emmy for her comedy special Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah and has been a producer on several projects.

But the legal troubles took a toll. Several projects were reportedly put on hold, and public opinion shifted. Despite this, Haddish continues to work. She had a voice role in the animated film Oh Hell No and has been developing a biographical comedy series about her life.

In her personal life, she has focused on sobriety, celibacy, and self-care. She often speaks about the lessons her grandmother instilled in her, including resilience and the importance of showing up even when life is hard. “My grandmother always told me to never give up,” Haddish said. “So I keep going.”

She also remains committed to using her platform to discuss mental health and addiction. By sharing her story, she hopes to destigmatize grief and encourage others to seek help before turning to substances.

As the legal battle in Georgia continues, Haddish is determined to clear her name. Whether or not the case is dismissed, she has already taken significant steps toward rebuilding her life and career. The next hearing is expected to be scheduled in the coming months.

The actress’s openness about her struggles serves as a reminder that even successful celebrities are not immune to the overwhelming effects of loss. “It sneaks up on you,” she said, echoing the title of the article. “And you have to find a way to deal with it before it sneaks up on you again.”
