StratoMast: The Core of the Stratospheric Network

At the heart of the roadmap is StratoMast, a hydrogen-powered high-altitude platform designed to operate at approximately 20,000 meters. StratoMast carries a compact mobile network payload suspended beneath a helium-filled envelope, forming a floating base station in the stratosphere. Its proprietary phased-array antenna concentrates reusable 5G capacity across an area of roughly 15,000 square kilometers per platform—comparable to the size of a small country. The system is engineered to provide cellular coverage directly to standard smartphones without requiring any hardware modifications, a capability often referred to as direct-to-device connectivity.

World Mobile Stratospheric positions StratoMast as a complement to both terrestrial cell towers and low-Earth orbit satellite constellations. Unlike satellites, which orbit at hundreds of kilometers and introduce latency, a stratospheric platform hovers at a fraction of the distance. This enables lower latency and higher data throughput. Unlike terrestrial towers, which are expensive to deploy in remote or rugged terrain, a single StratoMast can cover vast areas, making it ideal for connecting rural communities, maritime zones, and disaster-stricken regions where ground infrastructure is damaged or absent.

SkyMast and the Britten-Norman Flight-Test Pathway

To validate the technology, World Mobile Stratospheric is advancing the SkyMast programme in partnership with Britten-Norman, the iconic British aircraft manufacturer. The collaboration uses a modified BN2T-4S Islander aircraft as an airborne testbed for 5G system integration. In the partnership announcement, Britten-Norman stated that the collaboration will demonstrate a pioneering airborne 5G communication system and validate how aircraft-based systems can extend coverage to remote areas and restore communications after disasters.

The programme has moved beyond the announcement phase into active integration. Britten-Norman has confirmed that the Islander is prepared for the next phase, with installation of the airborne 5G antenna system underway at the company's MRO facility. Test flights are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026, and flight assessments will be conducted in cooperation with BT at its Adastral Park R&D facility in the United Kingdom. This phased approach allows the team to refine hardware and software in a controlled airborne environment before transitioning to the stratospheric platform.

The choice of the Britten-Norman Islander is strategic. Known for its short takeoff and landing capabilities, ruggedness, and ability to operate from unimproved airstrips, the Islander is a proven workhorse for remote operations. It provides a flexible and cost-effective platform for flight testing, enabling World Mobile Stratospheric to iterate quickly on antenna design, power management, and network handovers.

Direct-to-Device: More Than a Satellite Story

Direct-to-device connectivity is often discussed solely in the context of satellite networks, but World Mobile Stratospheric emphasizes that orbital and airborne systems are not interchangeable. A stratospheric layer offers wide-area reach while staying closer to terrestrial users, supporting underserved regions, emergency response, temporary capacity spikes, and data-sovereignty-focused network architectures. This is especially relevant as telecom operators explore 6G standards that explicitly include non-terrestrial network integration.

Micky Watkins, CEO of World Mobile Group, explained: "The next generation of connectivity will not be defined by coverage alone. It will be defined by how effectively networks connect people, devices and intelligence wherever demand exists. As AI moves from the data centre to the edge, and as direct-to-device becomes a major telecom category, the stratosphere gives us a powerful new layer between towers and satellites."

The company sees stratospheric connectivity as part of a broader shift in how critical communications infrastructure is planned, deployed, and governed. For governments, operators, and enterprises, the next generation of connectivity is not only about expanding coverage—it is about resilience when ground infrastructure is damaged or overloaded, flexible capacity when demand shifts, and greater control over how national and regional communications systems are designed. A stratospheric layer can support underserved regions, emergency response, temporary capacity, and data-sovereignty-focused network architectures, while integrating with terrestrial infrastructure and future non-terrestrial network standards.
