Presenting perspectives: Tulsa Town Hall’s upcoming season to include ‘Jeopardy!’ host, among other household names

The Tulsa Town Hall, a century-old lecture series that has brought thought leaders and entertainers to Oklahoma, announced its upcoming season features several household names, including Ken Jennings, the current host of the long-running quiz show “Jeopardy!”. The season marks the 100th anniversary of the series, which began in 1924 as a way to expose Tulsa residents to diverse perspectives and world-class speakers.

Executive Director Kathy Collins, along with Community Relations Manager Betty O’Connor, has curated a lineup that blends entertainment, education, and inspiration. “We’re thrilled to welcome Ken Jennings and other remarkable individuals to our stage,” Collins said in a statement. “This season is special because it reflects our history of presenting voices that challenge, entertain, and connect our community.”

Ken Jennings: From Contestant to Host

Ken Jennings became a household name in 2004 when he went on an unprecedented 74-game winning streak on “Jeopardy!”, earning more than $2.5 million in cash prizes. His record-breaking run captivated millions and turned him into a pop culture icon. After the death of longtime host Alex Trebek in 2020, Jennings was named one of the interim hosts and eventually became the permanent host in 2022, sharing duties with actor Mayim Bialik before Bialik left the show in 2023. Jennings now hosts the show along with its spinoffs, including “Jeopardy! Masters” and “Celebrity Jeopardy!”.

Jennings is also the author of several books, including “Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs” and “Planet Funny: How Comedy Took Over Our Culture”. His appearances often blend trivia, humor, and personal anecdotes, making him a sought-after speaker for events ranging from corporate gatherings to university lectures.

His presence at Tulsa Town Hall is expected to draw a large audience. “We know there is a huge fan base for Jeopardy! in Tulsa,” O’Connor said. “Ken connects with people of all ages, and his talk will be a highlight of our season.”

A Century of Community Dialogue

Tulsa Town Hall was founded in 1924 by a group of civic leaders who wanted to bring national figures to the city to discuss pressing issues of the day. Over the decades, the series has hosted U.S. presidents, Nobel laureates, astronauts, journalists, and entertainers. Past speakers include Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, Carl Sagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Neil Armstrong. The series is run by a small staff and a volunteer board, and it relies on ticket sales and donations to operate.

The 2024-2025 season will include a mix of speakers across politics, science, arts, and entertainment. In addition to Jennings, other confirmed names include former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell. Each speaker will give a 45-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session. The events are held at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, a venue that seats over 2,400 people.

Collins noted that the 100th season is an opportunity to reflect on the series’ legacy while looking forward. “We want to continue the tradition of presenting ideas that are thought-provoking and relevant to our community,” she said. “This season we have speakers who will talk about media, science, history, and even pop culture. There’s something for everyone.”

Community Impact and Engagement

The Tulsa Town Hall is not just about the lectures themselves; it also partners with local schools and organizations to provide educational opportunities. For select events, students can attend for free through a sponsorship program. Additionally, the series hosts meet-and-greet receptions after each talk, allowing audience members to interact with the speakers in an intimate setting.

O’Connor emphasized the importance of accessibility. “We want to make sure that the speakers are not just a treat for adults but also inspire the next generation,” she said. “When a student gets to meet someone like Ken Jennings or Neil deGrasse Tyson, it can change their perspective on what’s possible.”

The series also produces a podcast, “Tulsa Town Hall Talks,” which features excerpts from past lectures and interviews with speakers. The podcast has grown in popularity, extending the reach of the series beyond the state of Oklahoma. For the 100th season, the podcast will include exclusive content, including behind-the-scenes interviews with the speakers and staff.

Season Details and Ticket Information

The season runs from September 2024 through April 2025, with one lecture per month. Individual tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students. Season subscriptions are available for $250, which includes preferred seating and access to all nine lectures. Tickets go on sale to the general public in August 2024, but current subscribers and donors will have early access starting July 15.

The first lecture of the season, scheduled for September 10, 2024, will feature Ken Jennings. The full schedule, including dates and topics for each speaker, can be found on the Tulsa Town Hall website. Organizers expect high demand for the Jennings event and recommend purchasing tickets early.

Collins said she is optimistic about the season ahead. “We know that live events are making a strong comeback, and people are hungry for connection and shared experiences. Our 100th season will be a celebration of ideas and community, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone.”

The Tulsa Town Hall’s legacy is a testament to the enduring power of the spoken word in bringing people together. As the series enters its second century, it continues to adapt while staying true to its mission of presenting diverse perspectives. Whether through a famous quiz show host or a renowned scientist, each speaker offers a unique lens through which to view the world. For Tulsa, that is a tradition worth preserving.
